Though not from Baker Creek, I have grown lemongrass in Zone 8b for years. A Thai co-worker gave me a few little stalks and I planted them near the house. From those 2 small slips, I have divided and re-planted all around the house and garden. It makes a fantastic accent as a tall and willowy grass. One variety is "Eastern" lemongrass and is not as tall or thick-stalked, and one is "Western" lemongrass that is more widely used for Asian culinary purposes. The most showy clumps near the porch I dig up and place in a 3-gallon bucket in a south-facing (but shady) window over the winter with just enough water to cover the bare roots. They yellow just a bit until planting again in March, but then they're off and growing again. Other clumps I cut to just above the ground and let them be, and they over winter easily in the Deep South.

This grew very well last summer (2010) in our Zone 4a area. I brought some in before our first frost and it has continued to grow on our kitchen windowsill. I'm ordering more seed for this year!

I have planted a dozen or so of these around the swimming pool, though it does freeze in the winter at 32 or so, it is VERY quick to sprout back from the roots, it forms a 2foot dia' clump at the base that, for me reaches 5+ feet tall. Very long leaves that drap and blow in the breeze. i use the leaves to make thai soups and a very light mild lemony tea.
