Tender and delicious, violet-colored fruit are long and slender. This productive and tasty variety comes from the Southeast Asian country of Malaysia. A hard-to-find but very good variety that is perfect for frying.

What are the pros? productive, stores well

What are the cons? smaller than expected

Review:

I direct sowed 7 seeds in my garden this past spring. Some didn't come up and needed to be resown, but eventually I ended up with 7 plants. They were situated in a seemingly bad spot of my garden with almost no direct sun, but I really had nowhere else to put them. To my surprise they have been my most productive plants this season, even when they were in complete shade with at most only reflective light. They are still flowering and producing even now, 7 months later. My plants don't produce very long eggplant, maybe 6" at the longest, and for whatever reason some of the fruit turn out bright yellow instead of purple. This may have to do with lack of sunlight, but that's just a guess. Regardless of size and color though, they are delicious and they keep forever on the plant and on the counter. They can withstand our 115 degree summers without issue, the fruits set and they weren't tough or dry at all. I highly recommend planting these if you're an Arizona gardener.

What are the pros? Beautiful and stores well

What are the cons? Small and not very productive

Review:

Unfortunately, this eggplant was not happy in my garden. It was a poor producer, and had some misshapen fruit. However, this variety lasted two or three times longer than my other varieties after being harvested. For that reason, I will try to grow it again and see if I get better production this year.

What are the pros? very prolific

What are the cons? none

Review:

This eggplant takes a little longer to come into production, about 90 days from planting out six week old seedlings till the first fruit. But there were 8 eggplants forming at the same time with the first flush of fruit set. Malaysian Dark Red is a beautiful eggplant with great flavor and a very prolific producer.

Review:

I keep two plants two years old now ! I harvested 7 fruits on the best one yesterday. This one is incredible, it is producing again after each pruning and composting. I'm going to try to multiply it by cuttings. Never tried to do it with eggplants but I know it's possible. Two years old outside in the garden because equatorial conditions of course !!!

Review:

Great producer, beautiful plant, the fruit is stunning, flavorful. Broiled them in my nuwave oven along with the peppers that grew from the seeds I ordered from rareseeds. I get so excited when I walk out to the garden anticipating finding new fruit to pick. We have a short growing season and by the end of July I've picked over a dozen 6" fruit. The plants have held up in all weather conditions, cold wet spring, hot torrential rains to drought with over 100 degrees temperatures. All around winner!
