60 days. Early maturing butterhead lettuce for the earliest spring plantings. Pale green heads are tinged with red, and the sweet, pale yellow hearts have a pink blush to them. A wonderful 19th century heirloom.

What are the pros? Easy to grow in container

What are the cons? None

Review:

Started some seeds on winter solstice day in pots under grow light and some daylight in sun room. Plants are starting to form heads. Very happy to see this in the middle of 'artic vortex' weather in Chicago.

What are the pros? color and taste

What are the cons? did not hold up to rainfal

Review:

This first time growing May Queen didn't produce the lettuce I was hoping. This type never quite formed a nice head and, compared to other varieties I grew, turned to mush after several heavy rain storms. Even though we had a nice spring, I will give the leftover seed a second go next year.

What are the pros? Crisp

What are the cons? None

Review:

It's hard to grow head lettuces in the heat of San Antonio, but this one formed a loose head and had a nice crispness that the loose leaf varieties often lack. I planted every couple of weeks starting in November and had lettuce from Dec. through the middle of April. We've had a cooler than normal spring, so the lettuce has lasted longer than it usually does, but I still have one head of May Queen in the garden. Definitely going to grow this one again.
