(Phaseolus vulgaris) Half-runner. The Mayacoba Beans are a group of Lemon yellow beans that were probably selected by farmers over centuries in North Western Mexico. In the state of Sinaloa, these Canary/Lemon Yellow beans are an agricultural commodity. Later, they somehow made their way to Peru and they are equally appreciated by Peruvian Bean Farmers. The Mayacoba Beans are famous for another reason because in 1996 an American from Colorado selected some of them and then claimed to have developed them. Larry Proctor, applied for a “monopoly” patent and ridiculously was granted one on what he called the “Enola” bean, eventually after 10 years of court cases the court finally ruled that it was an invalid patent. Now the beans can be raised and sold by anyone, but for 10 strange years they were the “property” of Larry Proctor! If you like beans and are amazed by their vibrant diversity you will find these gorgeous and easy to grow.
