What are the pros? seed life, flavor, novelty
What are the cons? germination learning curve
--The first year I tried to grow some and had poor luck with them.
--Second Try: I tried starting them in trays later (end of May) and I got decent germination and managed to grow a couple large pots worth to show off at farmers markets to see if there would be an interest in them. They were VERY well received and both adults and children LOVED them. I found they did best in containers. Hanging baskets are easy to grow and harvest...but you MUST maintain even moisture in a container. I suggest something at least 12" diameter. The flavor is lemony tart and crisp, then changes to sweeter-seedier-softer. I thought it was good at all stages.
-- Year 3 growing: It is May 19, 2014 and I put seeds in my germination tent a little over 7 days ago. They just broke ground last night. The tent is close to 80 degrees all the time, lights are 5" above the tray & I put a heat mat under the cell tray. Germination on 4 year old seed is excellent!!
WARM AIR, WARM SOIL, EVEN WATER!!! That is the trick
