Miner's Lettuce

(Claytonia perfoliata) This West Coast native appears abundantly there in the early spring. Succulent, mildtasting leaves are not unlike spinach in texture, and saved many Gold Rush miners from scurvy. Enjoy it in salads or lightly steamed. Also makes a charming ground cover in the spring garden. Also known as Winter Purslane.

What are the pros? lovely shape

What are the cons? not much flavor

Review:

this is a gorgeous lettuce and grew beautifully in a container. not much flavor, as with many other lettuces, but the shape makes it a good candidate for a light and delicate salad. also beautiful in salads when it goes to flower.

Review:

Slow to start with very tiny seeds. Delicious, crisp rosettes once they get going in the spring. Likes cool weather and shade so we grew it over the winter in zone 9.

Review:

Didn't know you could actually plant your own Miner's Lettuce. We ate this as kids when we'd play in the fields in summer in Northern California. It grows well in semi-shaded areas, near water. We usually would find it in the dappled sunlit areas along the creek or in more boggy areas, or in the outer edges of where Oak trees grew. It's tasty, fresh, not crunchy and wilts easily. We'd try to bring some home, but after 1/2 hour of walking home, it was always rather pathetic looking. We'd just eat it as we explored, along with other wild herbs. If you grow this, enjoy! It will like more water than less, and a little shade doesn't hurt it. Better drained soil works best, but we found it wild even in the more boggy areas, but not IN bogs or mud.
