Miniature Fig - Ficus Carica

1 Review | Write a Review
Miniature Iranian Fig, (Ficus carica) This wild Iranian fig is small in size but very flavorful. Figs are actually quite easy to grow from seeds and can come into bearing in as little as 4 or 5 years. This particular fig should do very well in the Southwest, but one can experiment.  Figs generally need warmer winter temperatures. North of zone 7 it should be very protected from the cold by wrapping, or better yet, grown in a large pot and taken in during the harsh winter months.

Fruiting Fig Review

What are the pros? Beautiful

What are the cons? Slow Growers

These are slow growers and they are slow to sprout. I planted the fig seeds in 4" pots in a tray mixed with other seeds. ALL of the other seeds sprouted first and the fig seeds sprouted last. The first fig sprouts popped up and died immediately, but I decided to wait awhile. A few weeks later I came home from work and all of the fig seeds had sprouted. I thinned them out and they are slowly but surely growing. One true leaf sprouts at a time from the top of the fruiting fig. I am keeping three in the pot until they are a few inches high. There are no resources I can find on growing fruiting fig from seed, but they seem to be doing well for now. Would definitely recommend to someone wanting to experiment with fruit seed.
