(Dolichos lablab) Beautiful purple pods are used in Asia as a curry and stir-fry vegetable. Pick when small and tender, as old pods and dry beans may be poisonous! The long, rambling vine is also very ornamental with lilac-colored blossoms and purple stems. Thomas Jefferson planted this fine bean at Monticello.

Review:

I grew these on a trellis along my sidewalk. EVERYONE wanted to know what they were and cars even stopped in the street to ask about this plant. Beautiful flowers and beans-the purple next to the deep green leaves was stunning. The flavor was good-different than a normal bean. We had 10 neighbors at one time picking and eating! I am going to try the red leaved variety this year and hope for the same reaction!
