A superb type that makes a glorious focal point. The three-foot flower spikes are Roman purple similar to Love-Lies-Bleeding, but instead of trailing, the numerous branching flower spikes are held erect. Each branch tapers to a point, and the overall effect is of an octopus waving its tentacles. Something really different for your garden!

What are the pros? rich color, great form

What are the cons? flopped near end of season

Review:

I grew this variety for the first time this year as an ornamental and really liked it. It makes for a great addition to any bouquet or just foliage and form in the garden. The color is very rich (burgundy/maroon) and the form of the mature seed heads is very unique - upward spiral spikes. Mine grew no more than 3 feet tall and has a much smaller spacing than I expected (maybe 2 feet). I'm definitely planting this again next year!

What are the pros? beauty, great trap crop

What are the cons? reseeds freely

Review:

I grow 3 types of amaranth. They are all easy to germinate, they are beautiful and they are a wonderful trap crop. Bugs eat the leaves, not the seeds. Since they bugs are full of amaranth, they don't eat the other veggies. Win, win. They can have the leaves-I get the seeds!
