What are the pros? grows everywhere
What are the cons? takes over the garden
I just purchased home and previous owner had lovely raised bed garden....I have tons of this stuff growing. first everyone said it's weed pull it, I started pulling but decided to research and found out it was orach, but don't know if I should share it with others because don't want them to get sick or anything...the leaves are silky and now the plants are 6 to 12 inches tall

Taste: I originally planted orach to feed to my bunny but I can't stop eating it! It makes even the most mundane salads exciting with it's brilliant fuchsia color and subtle mineral flavor. I have not tried a hot preparation yet but as a cousin to spinach I am sure the meaty mature leaves would make a nice addition or substitute to any such dish.
Growing: I live in zone 10 and I planted these seeds along side my winter lettuce crop. It sprouted along with the lettuces but was a slow starter. I have not found it to be bitter at all, but I suspect heat, soil, and the age of the plant may affect it's flavor.

Everyone has been writing about how they use red orach in salads so I wanted to add a suggestion you may like to try: soup! In Romania, where I was born, red orach soup is a traditional spring soup that is VERY popular and tasty. In the States, since I haven't been able to find orach at any grocery store, I went for a very long time without this soup, until I learned to grow my own thanks to rareseed.com. I will be forever grateful to rareseeds for being able to re-create this childhood favorite. For a REAL Romanian experience, you may want to substitute lovage for parsley (we use lovage like Americans use parsley).

Beautiful color, a little bit of a slow starter I think because of our heat, Even though I am keeping them well watered. I would find information on whether they prefer alkaline or acid soils helpful, does anyone know? Also any information on spacing for these 4 foot plants I hear about? Mine are smaller than that although this is my first time growing them. They taste FABULOUS fresh in a salad with mixed greens. Loved them in a spinach salad with different types of spinach and warm bacon dressing vinegarette!

Millions of golden seeds on a burgundy plant makes for a wonderful Fall color. We use the leaves of orach for smoothies. I am constantly pulling out small plants in the Spring because it reseeds itself all over (even when I cut off the large seed heads. Great plant to have in the garden.
