(Origanum syriacum) We offer seeds from Israel for this plant that grows wild in Israel, Jordan and surrounding areas. Doubtless a common herb in Bible times, and still one of the tastiest! It has great flavor that blends hints of Oregano, Thyme and Marjoram. A favorite.

What are the pros? Survivor

What are the cons? Vines Wad Up, Hard to Handle

Review:

I planted this in my basement in the late fall. Unfortunately that was a few days before the gnats broke out. This plant came up in the worse of times, survived the gnats, survived my attempt to dry everything out, survived the gnats again, and then took off in the spring. I have just started cutting it back to the main starting point and letting it grow out again. The giant wad of oregano is kind of hard to deal with though...

What are the pros? Hardy and flavorful

What are the cons? fragile transplants

Review:

These are actually easier to grow than expected. Growing guides say these need sterile, perfect conditions, but they really just needed patience and loose, well-draining soil (think sandy, vermiculite/perlite, etc.) with good nutrients. Give them lots of time to germinate and expect a high rate of failure when transplanting. But once it is well-established, it vines beautifully and takes over. Very productive, dries and stores well. Aromatic and tasty. I hope they come back in stock soon.

What are the pros? Grows quickly and profusely

What are the cons? takes over the herb garden

Review:

I started the seeds on the patio until they were big enough to transplant into the raised bed. They have grown tall flowers and are crowding out my basil. It is an easy herb with a strong smell and taste of lemon and pepper. I put it directly in salads to add complexity of flavor. That being said, this is not the "Zaatar" we eat fresh in Lebanon as a salad with pomegranate molasses and onions. Either way, I love herbs that grow well and are highly edible - this fits the bill! Also drought tolerant once established.

What are the pros? flavor, resilient to cold temp

What are the cons? grows small

Review:

This plant is great. Flavor is amazing-think medicinal lemon/pine/oregano delicious! Hardens over winter. I even dug up the root systems when I moved and transplanted to the new garden. You would have never guessed it didn't originate from it's new location. Hardy but small. Color is really neat too. Must have!
