What are the pros? Taste, Heat & Bug Resistant
What are the cons? Nothing!
We bought a ranch near Abilene, TX in 2014, and the land had not been cultivated in over 40 years. 2014 was still an awful drought here, but by Feb. 2015 (and throughout 2015) we had flooding rains.
In May, we found 17 unknown squash plants growing all across our 200 acres. The plants had 8-10 ft vigorous vines, and by early Aug. each plant had 10 ripe squash. The goats and deer went crazy for them, so we only got 4 for us; but they were amazing baked w/ butter & brown sugar.
NO ONE around here knew what they were! I found the Pacheco online, and it's the ONLY thing our squash could be! One day at the feed store, I met a 93 y/o man who lived here his whole life, and showed him a pic of our squash. He got so excited, and said Native Americans grew them here & got the seeds from Mexicans crossing TX in the mid 1800's. He hadn't seen one in 75 yrs!
No telling how long the seeds had laid dormant here, but I just bought more seeds from BC, in case our "wild" ones never show up again!
