This fruit is an almost unknown Jungle beauty! The history of the plant's use by man is probably quite long, the fruits are definitely semi-domesticated or domesticated. In Panama it is known by a very small percentage of the people under the rather bizarre name of "Maracuja Chino" which translates to "Chinese passionfruit" It is absolutely not Chinese, and it is absolutely not a passionfruit! So without any other common name that makes any sense we have asked our experts and they agreed on a "common name" that we penned ourselves: Panama Passionfruit Melon! This fruit is like no other fruit that we know. Upon maturity the lime-green striped melon like fruits turn a glossy yellow with fine lines between the segments. The melons actually look like porcelain , we even considered calling it the Porcelain Melon. The next surprise is when a ripe fruit is cut open! The flesh of a ripe fruit starts to liquify, except for the outer layer, all of it can be scooped out, the flesh strained through as sieve to remove the seeds and then it is used to make an exquisite drink not unlike papaya juice. Scientific studies have shown that the fruit is extremely rich in Lutein and beta-carotenoids. It tastes like a papaya milkshake! The plant is in the Squash family, Cucurbitaceae, and it is a tropical/ perhaps subtropical climber. It should do well in zone 9 and 10 without shelter ( except rare frosts) and probably could be grown under protection as far as zone 7 --this is not yet proven but our suspicion. The vines are extremely productive producing as many as 200 fruits. It is all but unknown in cultivation! It is extremely rare! In a few words--shockingly gorgeous, delicious and nutritious!

What are the pros? easy to grow

What are the cons? no flower/fruit

Review:

This plant was very easy to grow and withstood a blight of mildew that affected all the other plants directly adjacent to it. Having said that, unlike my other passifloras (which this looks exactly like), it failed to flower or fruit. I will be trying again next year as this year's growing season was shorter than usual. I just wanted to mention the experience for the consideration of those interested in this plant. The leaves were big - like passiflora incense - and the care was minimal.

What are the pros? Grows fast, nice looking leaf

What are the cons? None so far

Review:

This is a fast growing vine even for Southern California zone 10a coastal influence. It even grows fast in part shade. Should be very vigorous grower for those in FL or Hawaii.
