Annual. Fern-like compound leaves on reddish stems, to 2 feet tall. Showy yellow pea flowers are marked with red, blooming abundantly from midsummer to hard frost. Native from the Plains eastward, where it is an important winter food for deer, quail, pheasants and other wildlife. Also a major bee forage—the bees harvest nectar not from the flowers but from nectaries along the stems. Sensitive leaves partially fold when disturbed. Takes drought and poor soil, which it improves by fixing atmospheric nitrogen. Has been used in erosion control. Choice subject for meadows, dry banks and wild gardens. (Caution: may be poisonous to cattle and other livestock.)

What are the pros? Will grow anywhere

What are the cons? Will grow anywhere

Review:

This came up as a volunteer in an area that had been a bed years before I moved here. I had rejuvenated the bed, and since it looked interesting I let it mature. Not a bad plant. Very full and healthy with small yellow flowers. If you do not want to weed this constantly do not let it set seed! If you want a plant that will come back every year this is your plant!

Review:

If you have an area of poor soil, this is a wonderful plant. I planted seeds in the early Spring in fairly hopeless soil. I walked away. They grew and flowered. I never cared for it all season either. It took care of itself. It is a food for butterflies and bees and has quite pretty flowers.
