Pencil Cob Dent Corn

This old classic “shoepeg” type corn has very thin cobs, hence the name. Long white kernels are great for corn meal, or picked young and used as a roasting ear; sturdy 6’ stalks produce 2-3 ears.

What are the pros? Easy enough to grow

Review:

I got this seed from my grandfather about 1972 soon after graduating High School and getting my own place. It's an OK corn, if picked early enough to get ahead of the field corn taste. Great to freeze if picked EARLY!!! the small pencil sized cob will not spread the cob taste into the kernels when thawed & or boiled on the cob. I spread lots of rotted horse manure in the rows and gave it lots of water before if began to set on it's ears. Many stalks had up to 6 ears under those conditions….but I found that if it shows more that 3 ears….remove all but the upper 3 and you won't be disappointed. Not so sweet like a true "Sweet." …. it feels good to continue an old variety from the family! My family has grown and saved back/shared this seed for the past 60 years…….. We have some pole type butter beans that have been saved back & handed down over 150 years now. Can't say where they came from but we ALL love them! Your true family history is right out back…..in your garden!

What are the pros? sturdy stalks, multiple ears

What are the cons? some lodging, aphids love it

Review:

narrow cobs don't fit my sheller, but they are easy to do by hand and leave less chaff on the end of kernels which is a great plus when coarse grinding for cornbread or breakfast cereal haven't figured how to know when suitable for sweet eating though This is dairy corn country and probably some GMO here, so I have to order seed if I want it to remain true.

Review:

We choose this variety to grow last season, and were very pleased with its success. It was easy enough to shell and dried nicely and is tasty to boot! We will be growing it again. Especially because the Black Aztec is not available this year. Now THAT was a great tasting grinding corn!
