What are the pros? heat tolerant, lasting blooms
What are the cons? Sets roots everywhere
I've never grown zinnias before, and I planted these on a whim. Despite my lack of attention, the two seeds I planted thrived through our intense desert heat, climbing all over the raised bed and rooting everywhere. They were slow to flower, but they have put out a few blooms that lasted forever. Even when one of the blooms was on its last leg, I cut it and stuck it in a vase and it lasted for a week before getting crispy around the edges. Arizona has its challenges, so unless you're dealing with similar conditions you probably want to plant your zinnias somewhere sunny, but mine thrived with only an hour of direct sunlight a day, and frequent watering. Frequent watering would be an understatement actually. My irrigation line had a puncture and this specific raised bed was flooded every morning for months. I have since fixed the line, dug up the plants and separated them into six. They are still flowering, since planting in May. They're great, the variations on the petals are lovely.
