Petrowski Turnip

1 Review | Write a Review
A nice yellow turnip with sweet, flat roots that mature quickly. In 1916 Burpee's catalog stated, "A most distinct variety of early maturity. The flat roots average two and a half to three inches in diameter, and the skin is a rich deep orange-yellow, very smooth and entirely free from small rootlets. The firm solid flesh is fine-grained, crisp, light orange-yellow in color, and having a flavor which is much richer and sweeter than any of the early white-fleshed sorts." This old turnip was introduced to England in 1879 by Suttons, who imported it from Germany, and around 1915 this variety was very important in Alaskan agriculture. A great variety for home and market.

What are the pros? great storage root crop

What are the cons? worms of course!

I am 69 years old and grew up eating these turnips! We had some that were 6" to 10" in diameter. We stored them in the root cellar. Mom made 'pumpkin pies' out of them since we couldn't grow pumpkins up here in alaska. (just goes to show what you can do to make a 'faux' pie, throw enough sugar and spices and eggs together and voila!) They were also sweet and juicy to eat raw and great in moose stews! Over the years it has been harder to find seeds for them. They were the only turnip we ever really planted. I am so glad they are still available.
