Pigeon Peas are an essential food in many parts of the world. Here in teh united States they are hardly known. Joe believes that they will actually do quite well in a large swath across the southern states. In the caribbean, Pigeon Peas are a staple food. They are cooked up in rice dishes and add a unique flavor to all dishes. "In the US they will grow in areas with little frost,(they are frost sensitive), they will grow up to small shrubs and they produce bumper crops of peas. One bush is enough to feed a family. Germination takes about 1-2 weeks. It would be worth experimenting in states like North Carolina and Arizona, there is a good chance that the young plants planted early enough would bear pods. Further south or in zones like Southern California they should produce heavy crops of peas. Finding out more about Pigeon Peas should be easy on line as well as finding proper recipes. This is a great plant that needs more fans!

Review:

I was given some pea pods from my neighbor who brought them from Puerto Rico. This is the first year I have tried to grow them, I have never eaten them either. My neighbor says my 3' plants look like they might produce a crop. I planted the dried peas 6 weeks ago and live in East Texas. Hopefully I will be able to post another review if I get a crop.

Review:

Pigeon peas are amazing plants. I live in zone 9a and have several 3 year old plants. I believe the seeds I got were from the Dominican Republic. They have survived temperatures down into the 20's with some damage (they are in a fairly protected spot). I wasn't expecting the plants to survive the winter but they did and continues to thrive and produce. I get a small spring crop and a huge crop in December. The first year I planted them in late February and they produced in December. They need no water or fertilizer, they are immune to insects and disease, and they produce a huge crop of beans twice a year. Plus they attract bees. What's not to love?
