What are the pros? Easy to grow once established

What are the cons? Difficult to germinate

Review:

This is a great plant that is well worth the extra effort of getting it to germinate. I poured boiling-hot water over the seeds and let them soak overnight before planting. Out of 10 seeds, three germinated. Within a month, one of the seedlings died (I kept them too damp), but the other two thrived and are now 5' tall with multiple stems. One is fruiting now, and it has been great fun to watch the little bananas develop. It wasn't easy to get them started, but this was a rewarding project for me and my then-little niece -- much more so than, say, growing an avocado from a pit or a pineapple from a pineapple fruit top (I've done both and neither have fruited or are likely to ever do so).

I would suggest taking a strip of sand paper and rubbing the seed coat on it quickly back and forth with the seed pinched between your thumb and index finger until you can see a little white of the endosperm. Then put in warm water over night. You should see the seed hydrate and eventually the embryonic root will push through a trap door in the seed coat by the second or third day. When you see this, put the seed in soil. This method works great for me with canna seeds which are in the same family as bananas. Canna seeds will also germinate quickly if you plant them outside in the height of summer. The trick is to break down the waterproof seed coat so water can reach the embryo and trigger germination. Cold will break down the coat but will also kill the embryo. I think the best way is to physically break down the seed coat is with sand paper. Try these tried and true tricks for stubborn canna on your bananas!

What are the pros? Very exotic

What are the cons? Overly difficult germination

Review:

It's been said many times before but still I have to say germinating these is close to impossible. My plant care may be debatable but I take pride in my germinating skills. I've had better success with germinating store-bought coconuts than these. I've been keeping the seeds under perfect conditions for almost 4 months now with half in growing medium and half in a zip-lock bag and still nothing. I'm keeping my patience but if you're considering buying these, I think you'd be better off putting your efforts into other plants or maybe another variety of banana. Or maybe not grow them from seed if you can get your hands on seedlings.

What are the pros? no

What are the cons? Not a single one germinated

Review:

I ordered these among several other seeds ( chiles, brugmansia, peppers etc) had great success with everything except these. Not a single one germinated. The package came with at least 20 seeds so I tried several techniques including the directions on package. Still I wasnt able to germinate any.

Review:

I grew lotus from seed this year and managed very well so I am not blaming myself, however, the banana seed refused to germinate. Not a one.
