WARNING: ALL PARTS OF PLANT ARE POISONOUS (Lupinus hartwigii) Annual. Diminutive plants with flower spikes barely exceeding a foot tall. Charming mix in dark blue, medium-pale blues, lavender, pinks, rose and white. Bees love the mildly fragrant blooms. Makes a fine cut flower, small enough for a ground cover or massed planting in sun or part shade. Summer flowers from a spring sowing. Native to Mexico and the American Southwest.

What are the pros? Easy to grow.

What are the cons? None

Review:

The only lupine I have been able to grow! I have tried Russel Hybrids & a large, 3 foot strain of Hartwigii lupines. The seed would grow, but the plants invariably died. This was indoors, in Madison WI, back in the mid 1960's. I tried the Pixies in Woodstock IL, in the early 1970's, on the North side of the house, with a white-painted house to our north, reflecting sunlight towards us. They grew and bloomed fine. I don't recall any reseeding. I don't remember if this is because of a move by us, or if they simply didn't reseed; we have moved a lot since then, & now live in Rock Falls IL. These also have the species name hartwigii, but these grew, while I never could get the big hartwigii's to grow.
