(Argemone albiflora) Annual. Gardeners don’t have that many options for white poppies, but here’s a choice one from western North America. Solitary white flowers appear in late summer, atop wiry 3- to 4-foot stems. Cup- shaped, single six-petaled flowers are huge—to 6 inches across, reminiscent of crinkled crepe paper. Bees love the pale golden centers. Plants are gray- green and, wait for it: prickly. Tolerates rather hot and dry conditions, poor but well-drained soils.

What are the pros? Lovely foliage, gorgeous bloom

What are the cons? Possibly easy spreading.

Review:

These poppies were ridiculously easy to grow. In fact, I neglected the seedlings this spring, then decided to put them in my yard, because why not? They grew anyway. When they say the foliage is prickly, they're not kidding, but the leaves are a lovely blue-grey color and the flower, when it blossoms is really glorious. Just like the picture. We'll see how fast it spreads.
