70 days. We’re so excited to offer this excellent new broccoli, a recent introduction from Frank Morton of Shoulder to Shoulder Farm! Frank crossed “Green Goliath” broccoli and a couple of kales, and eventually came up with this selection. “Purple Peacock” boasts gorgeous, sweet, magenta-veined leaves and loose, purple-stemmed main florets followed by copious side-shoots all season long!

What are the pros? Pretty purple leaves & flowers

What are the cons? weak plant, minimal production

Review:

Only half of the seedlings came up as purple. The other half are green all from the same seed packet. The "heads" are very loose and open, not tight like typical broccoli. I have had ZERO side shoots. Waste of space, time and money.

What are the pros? Very easy and prolific.

What are the cons? Not very consistent

Review:

I love the greens of this plant, I stew them with mustard and turnip greens; and occasionally I've added loose leaf cabbage as well. The purple color also makes it much easier to pick off the green caterpillars that assault any broccoli I try to grow. The heads did not seem to get as large as other broccoli I've grown, but mine never get as big as I'd like. My only real complaint about this plant would be that the heads were not at all consistent from plant to plant. One might have a nice tight head of broccoli at the top, while the next plant might have only a loose conglomeration of shoots with tiny florets. I just harvested all of the main florets, so hopefully they will start in with a good succession of side shoots now. This is a cool multipurpose crop, I would highly recommend it for the greens(which seem very nutritious) and the florets as well(which really seem like a bonus after all the greens I've eaten).

What are the pros? beautiful, taste great

What are the cons? no so far

Review:

1st to grow these. We started in a greenhouse and then planted them. I planted them in full sun and have other broccoli and cantaloupe growing around them to keep the roots cooler. We just harvested the 1st florets this weekend. cooked them up and they were very tasty and retain some of the purple even when cooked. Can't wait to see how they do through the hot summer.
