This is the incredible work of Pritam Kalia in India. He has been extremely dedicated with his friends creating new open pollinated varieties for small farmers and subsistence growers so that they can have better nutrition. Pritam's work places him as an anomaly among plant breeders, who for the most part are overtly concerned with creating hybrids and seeds that are often off limits to the poor. Pritam focused his efforts on producing nutrient rich varieties. This Pusa Asita Black carrot is one of his masterpieces! So rich in Anthocyanins that it is practically black! This is an open pollinated marvel that you should try to produce your own seeds for because it is rare and precious. It seems especially well suited for the south because it is presumably better adapted to shorter days. It tastes richer than a regular "orange" carrot, and is likely much more nutrient packed with anti-oxidants! Simply Amazing, three cheers for Pritam Kalia! PLEASE Try to SAVE some of your carrots for SEED, AND THEN SHARE THEM!

Review:

I am located in Japan, and have an aquaponic system. I was growing these for seed, because I would like more and you only get about 50 seeds, about 2 weeks ago, I noticed that some of the carrots had run to seed, which surprised me, because I sowed them in October and now it's April, carrots are biennials. Not to miss out, I just harvested two: They are about 12 to 15 inches long, scrubbed the fine roots off of them and proceeded to start cutting bits from the thin end to try, my first impression was a beetroot, the end of the root was soft, as I carried on chopping and eating, it became firmer. My chopping board, knife and hands were purple. There was no hard centre, I could see the core, but no separation in texture, found or seen. The taste was mild, due to growing in an aquaponic system I assume? My small round carrots growing in the next media bed have a stronger taste. Well done Pritam Kalia. I may share my carrots and other produce, but share my seeds. . . . ;-)

Am anxious to plant Pusa Asita Black Carrot, but I can't find if these are a spring, summer, or fall product. The only reference is "...It seems especially well suited for the south because it is presumably better adapted to shorter days...."

What are the cons? I should have planted more

Review:

These are tasty and sweet. I can't get carrots to grow well in our rocky soil, but these carrots just grew around and between rocks. My husband said "it looks like they grew through the rocks"

Review:

Beautiful carrot ! We planted for Fall 2014 and have harvested only a few for tasting, the rest will be for seed. What a carrot, intense purple/black color with a rich deep carrot taste. Turned my chicken broth a deep purple. Awesome roasted with other root vegi's.
