Pritam Kalia, a world renowned vegetable breeder, created this amazing red variety. His work centers on creating nutritious and hardy vegetables for India's poor subsistence farmers. This particular variety is very high in beta-carotene and Joe believes also lycopene. This carrot is sure to become a favorite heirloom around the world as it is simply beautiful and delicious! This amazing variety of carrot was brought to us by botanical explorer Joseph Simcox.

What are the pros? They are red.

What are the cons? Flowered, hairy roots, bitter

Review:

I agree with the comments from the person from IL. I see that the warmer climates love this carrot, but I was disappointed. I really wanted to find a good red/purple carrot. I have had some of the same issues with other red/purple carrots. Maybe our cooler climates? First they did not germinate well. A number of plants flowered, had woody stems. Others had excessive hairy roots, tasted bitter. Only ended up with a small crop of edible carrots, and they had an odd taste to them. My other orange carrots were fine. I don't mean to discourage other gardeners from giving these a try - that is part of the fun of gardening. But these carrots just didn't perform well for me.

What are the pros? large root, excellent flavor

What are the cons? none

Review:

Planted this in my raised bed. The roots are a beautiful color and size. The flavor is so mild. My children even liked it, and they won't usually eat carrots! I can't wait to grow more of these! Plan to grow them in our school garden for our gardening club kids too! All around excellent carrot!

What are the pros? Seeds sprouted beautifully

What are the cons? taste, seed set, hairy rootlet

Review:

I have never before seen an *entire* crop of carrots flower and set seed in their first year after sprouting - but these did just that. Obviously, once this happens, the carrot is essentially inedible and those that I tried were bitter and woody. I started a second crop in July and harvested when they were pencil-thick, just in case, so I can not say if some sort of environmental factor was at play in the first crop. This second crop had good texture, but still had an oddly bitter note. The carrots grew nice and straight for me, but I tended to also get quite a bit of rootlet growth leading to werewolf roots.

What are the pros? Texture and color outstanding

What are the cons? take long to grow

Review:

For the carrot, is tender all through. The carrot flavor is very nice. No need to peel, only wash. The combination of colors is beautiful, from red-salmon, or almost mamey to orange and yellow to the center. Love it. I wish to see this seeds again in your page

What are the pros? best tasting carrot ever

What are the cons? none

Review:

I think this is the best tasting carrot I have ever had, and my husband agrees! Not only are they beautiful in color but a strong grower. This carrot out performed all my other carrots even when spaced very close together. You can not go wrong with this variety!
