Red Beauty Carrot

80 days maturity; exceptionally sleek roots tapered at the end, 10 - 12 “ long, red skin with 100% red core; sweet flavor also suitable for juicing; because of its shape, size and color, it has the potential to be a favorite carrot in the market and in your garden. It is a selection and an improvement brought to us by a breeder from Northern India.

What are the pros? None

What are the cons? Woody, hairy, inedible

Review:

I planted several varieties of carrots this year and this was by far the least successful. They kept pace with the other carrot varieties but, when I harvested them, they were extremely tough, woody, and covered in dense root hair. I had planted them in a container outside in April. My main harvest of carrots was at the end of July but I had been plucking carrots from each bed throughout the intervening months. The red beauty carrots were consistently unsatisfactory throughout that time.

What are the pros? Color! Flavor

What are the cons? Percentage bolt

Review:

This is the first time I've had success with carrots. I grew 2 varieties and they both grew well. A more modern variety of Chantennay was very uniform. This variety was less uniform in shape, but the color is eye-popping and the flavor is classic. These also seem to be sensitive to fertilizer (or something i did) they sprouted lumps and hairs on the exterior. Some of them spiraled and curled around eachother (which was honestly fun to see ). Neither of those things effected the edibility. ~~There was a percentage that flowered and were woody. ~~~I kept the bed watered until germination. After that it was on its own in the scorching drought. Planted early May, harvested July 15.
