This short day onion is great for the South and is a good keeper. Hard, flat bulbs have spicy, red flesh. A good cooking onion or in salads.

I seeded my Red Creoles a few days after Christmas indoors and put them in the ground in late February. Need to mention the germination rate was close to 100%. It is May 19 and some of the bulbs are already 3" in diameter. Although I haven't eaten one yet I will have these in my garden every year from now on. I am going to try to over winter some this fall.

I live in extremly hot dry climate and have drip irrigation. These onions bulbed earlier than Texas Grano. they kept well +- 4 months hanging on the verandah, then they started to sprout, I still continued to use them. The y are attractive and very tasty. My friend re planted her sprouting ones and they got extra new bulbs on them. What I did notice is that the ones I left to go to seed did, and I have got my second crop in from those seed (I mention this because Texas Grano refused to seed ).

This variety did well here in the Florida Panhandle. I planted in the fall and let them over-winter. The onions were ready in April. Good flavor, but I don't know about how well they keep because we ate them too fast.

Review:

Short day heirloom onion seeds are not that easy to find and in the sub-tropics the day length really does matter. The Red Creole grew to maturity in about 5 months and were the earlist of the bulbing onion seed varieties I planted last fall. These onions were medium sized, fairly mild but not sweet.
