What are the pros? Healthy, lots of peas!
What are the cons? None
I grew these by accident and love them. All the reviews I've read are from more southerly locations, but these do great in northern Illinois. They got going later than my other beans, but once they took hold, they went crazy. I grow all my beans up the trunk of a copiced japanese lilac, which ends up looking like a carousel by the end of the season. It's early October, and my red rippers are still going strong, rambling over my peppers with abandon. The peppers don't seem to mind, so I will keep them in the ground until first frost. I still get a thrill opening a ripened pod to find a row of bright pink beans. Super tasty, might be my favorite cowpea! I highly recommend them for zone 5. They don't seem to care about dry spells and couldn't be more giving in the amount of pods. Make sure you have room in your garden as the leaves are huge and the plants love to wander.
