The Prickly pear is one of the most loved fruits of Mexico and now is grown and eaten all over the world. In Europe outside of Spain Prickly Pear fruits are called "Figs of India" , for some reason this name stuck and even though the originals are from Mexico, it is likely that the prickly pear fruits was made famous in India for Europeans! This particular variety the so called "Reina" is one of the sweetest and largest fruits. The are grown in large quantities in San Louis Potosi state in Mexico and are also found in other states in commercial production. The seeds have naturally slow germination, some will pop up within a couple for weeks others may linger for months. Don't water seedlings too much- They are cacti! Overwatering will kill the seedling! Plants can come into flower in as few as 3 years from seed!
This variety is only slightly tolerant of frost, so would do best in the Southern states with protection from frosts in the winter!
