What are the pros? pretty, super easy
What are the cons? gets bitter quickly
This lettuce has grown excellent for us in both drought and overly wet springs, and is always the first to come up when we do winter sowings through the snow. I've had it overwinter (we usually harvest by the leaf) successfully.
Most of our soil is very poor, and Rouge Grenobloise well out performs most other varieties here. It's only unfortunate drawback being taste. I like a fair amount of "crunch", which this has, but it lacks any real flavor. It also quickly goes bitter.
This is great variety for fall sowings, if you have long or exceptionally cool springs, or grow other varieties of lettuces that can pick up where this one leaves off.
Once the weather gets even slightly warmer however, we let it sit ignored in favor of sweeter varieties. This one still earns it's place in my seed saving though because it will often grow before and better than other varieties when the conditions are poor.
