Beautiful red-tinted Batavian (Crisphead) lettuce,;the heads have excellent flavor. Very cold hardy and slow to bolt, vigorous growing plants; great producers. This fine old lettuce comes from France.

What are the pros? Frost, sleet? It thrived!

What are the cons? None

Review:

This is our favorite. When winters are milder here, it grows and grows. Lasted until mid-summer. I harvest by the leaf, saved seed from the plant that bolted last. The multi color looks great in your salad bowl and the leaves are wonderful, nice crunch in a sandwich or salad. Will keep growing this with some Romaine and Oak Leaf. Real winners.

What are the pros? pretty, super easy

What are the cons? gets bitter quickly

Review:

This lettuce has grown excellent for us in both drought and overly wet springs, and is always the first to come up when we do winter sowings through the snow. I've had it overwinter (we usually harvest by the leaf) successfully. Most of our soil is very poor, and Rouge Grenobloise well out performs most other varieties here. It's only unfortunate drawback being taste. I like a fair amount of "crunch", which this has, but it lacks any real flavor. It also quickly goes bitter. This is great variety for fall sowings, if you have long or exceptionally cool springs, or grow other varieties of lettuces that can pick up where this one leaves off. Once the weather gets even slightly warmer however, we let it sit ignored in favor of sweeter varieties. This one still earns it's place in my seed saving though because it will often grow before and better than other varieties when the conditions are poor.

Review:

This lettuce tastes good and is a real stunner. It grows quite quickly, and is fairly cold hardy- kind of a frilly Winter Density.
