Royal Golden Watermelon

The most beautiful watermelon we carry; the rind of this heirloom turns brilliant golden-yellow when ripe! The distinctive color makes it a snap to know when to harvest and is so beautiful in your garden. The tasty pinkish-red flesh is sweet, crisp and refreshing. This variety is much larger than 'Golden Midget', with fruit weighing 8-25 lbs. We are so happy to offer seed for this great old melon that used to be offered by Willhite Seed of Poolville, Texas, until they discontinued it from their catalog in the 1970s and it almost became extinct.

What are the pros? taste

What are the cons? none

Review:

I just harvested my first royal golden watermelon of the year. This watermelon is a beautiful golden on the outside and deep red on the inside. The flavor is just as good as it looks. Thanks baker creek for offering old varieties so the seed saving tradition lives on. I will be planting royal goldens every year from now on.

What are the pros? sweet flavor

What are the cons? hard to grow

Review:

I have to agree with the other reviews about the difficulty in starting these seeds. I live in PNW, sowed this seed early May, took 9 days to emerge. Transplanted outdoors early June. Leaves looked yellow, found out this was normal. Plants struggled to grow, 2 out of 6 plants died. My husband overwatered the plants when the fruit set and one melon rotted. We backed off watering once the next melon on the vine ripened. We were rewarded with the sweetest tasting watermelon we have ever grown even though we did not wait for it to turn pure yellow like the picture in your catalog. It had numerous large seeds in the cavity of the melon which would be great for a watermelon spitting contest! Not sure if I want to go through the process of planting this variety due to its tempermental growing pattern. Out of 4 plants, we harvested 8 melons!

What are the pros? Beautiful Melon

What are the cons? Vine Declines when yellow

Review:

Just ate a 25lb Golden Yellow watermelon. I have deep sandy loam, so watermelons do well here. Planted two plants, have about 6 melons that are maturing. The vine does turn yellow as the fruit matures.I use Miracle Grow with a few drops of Super Thrive. This really makes the plants take off.

Review:

I'll second "hard to get started" It took 2 of those 10 seed packs to get 5 hills started (replanted once). The taste was good and well liked by all. Insect resistance was good except for losing one hill to mole crickets. They did well to stay alive in our June weather, bad drought and blazing hot. Undecided if I'll replant.
