Poor rue is often misunderstood. The leaves are bitter and powerfully aromatic. Rue can be added to soups and stews for depth and complexity. If you add a small quantity of rue to soup (small branch for a medium size pot of soup) , your friends will ask for more, wondering where that lush smell comes from.
As mentioned above the seeds germinate easily. The compact plant is beautiful and easy to grow and who knows one day you may pinch a few leaves into a dish and become a rue fan.

I think that rue has terrific foliage but I really don't like the smell at all. However, it is a terrific addition to my front edible landscape as it adds a wonderful silvery-green foliage to contrast with rhubarb and salvias that are nearby.
I directed sowed as I timing for space in the greenhouse was limited. Germination rate was high and the plants are robust.
I recently started some more rue to plant near the hen house along with tansy, feverfew, and wormwood and the rue germinated quickly will soon be ready to plant out.

I have not used rue for any medicinal nor culinary use, but grow it for its beauty. However I currently have it in my herb garden, which is rather moist. I have several plants growing, as it germinated very well, Some of them will not survive, others are growing slowly. I plan to relocate them to a flower garden which is hot and dry which should suit these plants well.
Rue is a very nice looking plant and I'm glad I gave it a try.
