What are the pros? Good taste, not bitter

What are the cons? None, really. Bugs like it.

Review:

This is a great variety for people who like a softer textured kale and less bitter taste than the ones in the grocery store. We pick leaves when they're about 5-10 inches and use them for salads and sauteed greens, and this is great for both. It grows back quickly so you can have salads every day if you grow a small plot (3' x 3') of plants. It grows very well in deeper containers, but in the ground, the bugs and rabbits here seem to get to it more readily. Don't put it in shallow containers because it doesn't grow very high when roots are crowded. I've also noticed that it seems to like acidic soil, as the one seed that fell near my blueberries grew very fast!

What are the pros? Winter crop, hardy, productive

What are the cons? None

Review:

I planted this in November in zone 6b, with a plastic cold frame I bought on Amazon for about $30. I had never gardened in the ground before (experimented previous summer with window boxes). I dug a hole in the ground and filled it back in with store bought garden soil and native soil, direct sowed kale seeds, watered when I thought to. Pretty soon I was thinning baby kale and eating it straight out of the cold frame. The kale grew all winter, survived being actually frozen many times, and is very mild. I eat it raw or use it like spinach. Now it's May, the kale is about 3.5' tall, I'm giving it away constantly or looking for recipes for large amounts of it (like using it like collards, cooking it down). I'm amazed by this stuff, it gives and gives, and I barely even water it. Bugs have eaten some lower leaves, but it's so prolific I don't care. The experience has spoiled me on gardening, everything else I've planted requires more attention. Buy this kale, you won't be disappointed!

What are the pros? Sounds great

What are the cons? Slug city

Review:

I never had a fighting chance against the slugs so it must have been delicious. As gross and enraging as slugs are, they do have good taste in veggies. They thought it was so delicious that instead of being long gone by morning (they are master hiders) I would find the slugs lolling in the dirt after their all-night kale binge. I've developed pretty good organic slug defenses since I'm in Oregon but in October/November this was the only thing on their menu and they were not to be deterred.

Review:

Im growing this as baby kale. Started it early in the season, way up here in zone 3b. It matured quick, tastes great and just keeps coming back. It has been an amazing seller and I constantly get the feedback that its the best kale people have ever had.

Review:

I planted Ragged Jack in October of '13 and reviewed it in '14. One of the seeds came up spring of '15 and grew despite being overshadowed by indeterminate tomatoes. It was hammered by aphids and barely grew, but as soon as we had a frost it looks wonderful. We'll enjoy it again this winter.
