(Salvia officinalis) Used in Europe and America to flavor many meats, stuffings, vinegars and more! Fragrant leaves are also used in potpourri, 20 inch tall gray-green plants are quite attractive.

What are the pros? Easy to grow, very productive

What are the cons? Attract pests

Review:

I live very far up north in zone 2A. I've been told that sage is not hardy in my area but thanks to a good winter snow cover, I can overwinter sage, french tarragon, are many other perennials that should not survive here. My sage grew easily from seeds and produced a lot. The leaves are beautiful and very ornamental. After the first winter the stalk become woody and cannot be added to recipes but the leaves are still very nice and tender. I moved my plants from the garden to a container this summer. Last year the caterpillars and slugs caused serious damage to the plants and made the leaves unusable. They're now thriving , safe from the garden pests on my balcony. I'll bring them indoor when it get cold so I can enjoy it all winter.

What are the pros? Large germination rate

What are the cons? Nothing yet.

Review:

These guys germinated and popped up within a week of sowing in trays. Moved them to my balcony herb planter and they are doing fantastic! I have already been munching on some of the baby leaves in marinades and in sautes. Hopefully will be able to keep it alive in the planter through the winter, if not, WILL buy again.

What are the pros? Very good Germination

What are the cons? none

Review:

I started these indoors and had a pretty successful crop of seedlings. The ones I then transplanted outdoors all died, but the weather here went from 50 degrees to 95 degrees in just 2 days! The ones I still have that I kept in pots indoors are doing great and smell amazing! While the plants aren't as big as some sage plants I have had in the past, they have incredibly strong smell and flavor.

Review:

Bought in spring 2013, 1st year growing so only got 2 seeds to take, but out of 2 plants was able to dehydrate a quart jar. Bought them again for next year planting season. Going to try and start them inside to see if I get a better germination. I would recommend.

What are the pros? Smells great

What are the cons? A little hard to grow

Review:

Over all, I enjoyed growing this plant but it does't like hot weather, had to be careful of over watering it plus I had to move the pot around to find the best location for it. Smells great, can't wait to use it in my corn bread dressing. Find and read information on how to grow it.
