What are the pros? Easy to grow, very productive
What are the cons? Attract pests
I live very far up north in zone 2A. I've been told that sage is not hardy in my area but thanks to a good winter snow cover, I can overwinter sage, french tarragon, are many other perennials that should not survive here. My sage grew easily from seeds and produced a lot. The leaves are beautiful and very ornamental.
After the first winter the stalk become woody and cannot be added to recipes but the leaves are still very nice and tender.
I moved my plants from the garden to a container this summer. Last year the caterpillars and slugs caused serious damage to the plants and made the leaves unusable. They're now thriving , safe from the garden pests on my balcony. I'll bring them indoor when it get cold so I can enjoy it all winter.
