Nicotianas were popular in early America and were planted by Thomas Jefferson. This tall variety produces flowers that open in the day; the colors range: pink, red, lavender, rose, and white. These are easy to grow and cause a splash of color.

What are the pros? Fragrant, humming birds, cut

What are the cons? messy, very tall

Review:

These are beautiful flowers that attract large amounts of hummingbirds as they release a jasmine like fragrance at dusk. This is a very pretty mix of white, purple, pink, red and green flowers (no yellow or orange like every other seed mix I seem to buy). These make excellent cut flowers that last over a week. If they are in full sun, they can grow to be 5-6 feet tall which was way more than I was expecting and overtook the space! It's also important to know that they can be messy when they go to seed. The dried flower heads are everywhere! This would be fine in a normal garden, but unfortunately I planted ours around our pool and it was a huge mess. They also self seed and since the birds love the seeds, I imagine we will have this plant popping up everywhere next year. I do love this plant and will plant it again. I just won't plant it around a pool!

What are the pros? fast growing, hardy

What are the cons? nothing!

Review:

WOW! The picture shows a pale, boring flower, but ours are bright, fun shades of pinks, reds, and purples. These are the perfect size for our bees to climb into for a snack. They are between 2 and 3 feet tall, most of which is flowers. They bloom over and over, and thrive in our poor clay soil. As a bonus, the racoons and other destructive critters in our area avoid them. I will definitely buy again, and will plant more next year!
