A beautiful and delicious plant that is very popular in Asia. The purple-red leaves are used to color and flavor vinegar and to make beautiful, pink rice. Great in salads; flavor is a mix of basil and mint.

What are the pros? Nothing- not one seed sprouted

What are the cons? Germination Rate

Review:

I was very disappointed with this seed. I attempted to Germinate indoors under a powerful grow light- no luck, then I tried direct sowing- no luck, then I tried greenhouse - no luck, then I tried outdoors in a pot- no luck. I also tried in Winter and in Spring and once recently towards the end of our spring which is more like other's summers with temps in the 90s and up - No luck. I have never not been able to germinate seeds. I tend to always have the best of luck and usually read reviews like this and think something must have been done wrong. Might I add- I did not bury the small seeds deeply, just barely beneath a dusting of soil. I tried in native dirt, compost and general garden soil. At one point, I even tried a misting teh soil with fish emulsion. Everything near by grew supercharged. These seeds... well, I still have pots and areas barren of even a sprout and I sadly gaze longingly each morning for signs of life.

What are the pros? Grows fast, easy care.

What are the cons? Spreads like crazy.

Review:

I bought some Shisho a few years ago, and due to human error I ended up with only one mature plant. However, that plant grew to an enormous size, and once it went to seed, I have been finding it sprouting up every spring since, even in places I didn't think it would have reached. A quick Google search will reveal tons of uses for this otherwise obscure plant. We look forward to a bright purple drink make out of it's leaves every summer.

What are the pros? Grows easily

What are the cons? Not purple.

Review:

I bought the purple perilla or shiso because I want to use it in my japanese cooking. However, while it is thriving, all of my plants are green. Does it change colour as it matures?

Review:

This plant is truly a 'gift that keeps on giving'. I was given a volunteer plant 10 years ago, and the seeds that it dropped have come back by the hundreds. It is a gorgeous dark purple, and has been in my flower beds, garden and as filler/contrast in my flower bouquets... Maybe I just don't know how to use it in cooking, but I'm not impressed with the flavor...
