The historic cucumber of Sikkim. Fat, large fruit can reach several pounds in size. The ripe fruit is a unique rusty red color and is good eaten cooked or raw. In Asia, cucumbers are often stir-fried and are quite tasty. This variety is grown in the Himalayas of Sikkim and Nepal. Sir Joseph Hooker first discovered it in the eastern Himalayas in 1848. Here is part of what he wrote about it: “So abundant were the fruits, that for days together I saw gnawed fruits lying by the natives’ paths by the thousands, and every man, woman and child seemed engaged throughout the day in devouring them.”

What are the pros? TASTE!!!!
What are the cons? Not enough
Planted them in our homestead and for a business client. They are growing like MAD at the client's location, but we are still waiting on ours to mature. Wacky weather this year for our zone, so not losing faith in the product. Seed germinated easy, plant is healthy and vining very well, but fruit is slower to mature than expected. Planted seedling in late May. First year to grow. Will report back at the end of growing season. Very happy with the taste from fruit given to us from the client. :)

What are the pros? Fun Vegetable
What are the cons? Short season.
I built a trellis and grew Sikkim cucumbers and Lemon Cucumbers. The vines look the same and grew over the top of the 6 '6" Trellis. In my back yard I use the original Square Foot Method. I can't afford raised beds. I gave away most of my crops. Everyone enjoyed the unusual color of these cucumbers, Like a little football with a crackle finish. I plan to plant more next year.

I harvested these today as I had planted later in spring and they hadn't all quite ripened up before the cold weather caused the vines to die. They look fantastic, they smell earthy, and the ripest ones (while no larger than a normal cucumber) weighed a hefty pound each. The taste is interesting as well - best I can describe it is that bit of watermelon between the super sweet color and the sour white rind, where it's very juicy and somewhat sweet but not overpowering. (Sort of like Jicama.) I really like it! Will be planting again for sure next year, only earlier.

It was fun for our family to discover these massive and oddly colored cucumbers growing amongst our other cucumber vines. They taste great in a salad

Had my first Sikkim today. Nice mildly sweet flavor and juicy. Wife informed me I am definitely planting next year. We so can not wait for more.
