(Cicer arietinum) This is one of the chickpea types known as “desi” type chickpeas. Desi type chickpeas are defined by the angulate and darker colored seeds. Chickpeas are primarily cultivated in the South West Asia and the middle east, Americans eat about 20 times less than their Western Asian counterparts! All chickpeas are relatively easy to cultivate. They do well and germinate even with quite cool temperatures and either prefer coolness and dryness or heat and dryness, but not heat and lots of water! The mature not yet dried pods can be boiled, and the seed extracted as a wonderful appetizer.
