Review:

This milkweed provides food and shelter to monarch and queen butterflies. A plant grouping of milkweed, nasturtium, and calendula is just wonderful in the garden. The calendula and nasturtium hide the ankles of the milkweed which isn't its best feature! Our milkweeds are covered with butterfly caterpillars munching away as butterflies fluttering around the garden. While the another taller milkweed became the place to be for the metamorphosis, this shorter curassavica was munched and munched. Beware that this plant readily self-sows so plan to collect seed, don't allow it to set seed, or simply transplant the volunteers. I found that the caterpillars did a great job of finding and eating most of the seedlings nearly to the ground! A little pruning to keep the plant in bounds along with a bit of water is all it needs here in San Diego.
