Tall Telephone Garden Pea

Long vines reach up to 6 feet with support, and large pods yield 8-10 peas each. The peas are large in size, being sweet and tender. This popular garden favorite was introduced in 1881 and is still a standard with many.

What are the pros? Delicious and plentiful

What are the cons? None

Review:

These guys took a while to get going, but once they finally did they kept going and going. I had a whole package of seed, about 12 feet worth, and was picking about 5 pounds a week for over 6 weeks. I usually grow peas in the same spot as squash or pumpkins since they are short season, but these peas really started to compete as the squash vines were starting to set fruits. As soon as we had a hot spell in the 90's they suddenly quit on me. I was secretly relieved. Very delicious peas and they seem to freeze well.

What are the pros? Production and easy

What are the cons? Need for stronger support

Review:

Not much amended to the soil, maybe bonemeal? Looked weak in the beginning but then bam! Lots of pea pods. Pick em just right and they'll be sweet or not stringy if you want to stir fry the pods. Some of the pods are 4 inches long. My only regret is I didn't give it enough support. Will definitely plant again.

What are the pros? Don't have to break your back

What are the cons? Non

Review:

I've been growing these for years and years. Sometimes they get a wilt or something, I just pull those plants out. By now I pretty much saved the "good" seeds, so there is less and less yellowing problem. Change their planting location every year - just the other side of the fence... (Same as with the beans.) There is always plenty for fresh eating and freezing too. I water them regularly, and pick every two days. They are not picky, small and large seeds both taste great. I usually have 9 seeds in a pod. Wish they would be a bit earlier, but a little waiting is a small price not to have to bend over.

What are the pros? packed pods

What are the cons? need very sturdy trellis

Review:

Wonderful! Packed pods, can stand to stay on the vine for awhile past peak picking without compromising the flavor. Perfect when you're out of town and can't pick everyday.
