Tarahumara White Seeded - Sunflower

1 Review | Write a Review
Grown by the Tarahumara tribe for their mostly white seeds, plants produce beautiful 8-10-inch golden yellow flowers on tall plants. We are proud to offer this rare heirloom that may have originally been brought to Canada by Russian Mennonite farmers.

What are the pros? super easy, attract beneficial

What are the cons? inconsistent variety

I planted these mid March and they came up by the end of March (I think I planted in too cold soil.) They were so easy to grow, tons of bugs chewing on them, but the plants barely noticed. They shot up to 15 feet tall by mid May, when they began to flower. As they flowered, three different phenotypes became visible. I had 7 plants. So far all are white-seeded, but one is mammoth size/1 flowerhead, three are small-headed/multi-flowerhead, and the others are medium head/1 flowerhead. The plants themselves are enormous and wide, need at least a solid 2 feet of space on all sides. Seeds are just now (mid June) starting to mature, so no report on seed yield or taste yet. On the plus side, bees (and wasps) love them, and other plants next to them seemed to benefit from their proximity. I just wish I knew which phenotype they are supposed to be and that they were more consistent.
