(Hibiscus sabdariffa) A valuable plant for making cranberry-flavored bright red beverages, jelly, pie and tea. Much grown in Asia and the mid-east as the flavor is wonderful. A tasty sauce can be made by boiling and sweetening the fleshy calyxes; the leaves are also used to make a drink. The entire plant of this Hibiscus is red and very beautiful. Start early, unless you live in the far-south. Citrus-flavored flowers are delicious on frozen deserts. This plant has too many uses to name here. Collected in Thailand.

What are the pros? Great color, delicious leaves

What are the cons? n/a

Review:

I started these early indoors and every seed germinated, transplanted them into solo cups.. and then never got around to planting them in the ground at the proper time. In the cups they grew to 2 - 3 feet tall, and when I finally put them in the garden in July or August they were root bound but still grew another foot. No flowers, but maybe that's my fault? Even without the blooms the plants were beautiful with bright green leaves and red stems. The leaves taste like sour cherries or strawberries, and I enjoyed picking them off to eat as I walked past. I'll be growing these again next summer for the leaves to use in salads, and if they end up blooming, great! If not, I won't be disappointed.

What are the pros? Highly ornamental

What are the cons? I killed them

Review:

Grown in 5 gallon containers. Only one seed in the pack failed to germinate. They grew 4-5' tall by early August (still no flowers), and I received a lot of compliments on their appearance. Unfortunately I foliar fed them one time using the standard 1 TBS per gallon of seaweed extract, and they went into shock and did not fully recover. The rest of my garden loves it and the Roselles were the only plants affected. Will definitely grow again next year.

What are the pros? beautiful plants, easy to star

What are the cons? long season

Review:

I started the seed indoors in February & transplanted to the garden. They were large plants but they never bloomed even though our season was unusually long this year. I realized after the frost that I could have used the leaves, not just the flowers so never got a chance to try it.

What are the pros? magical shape and color

What are the cons? none

Review:

It produces as promised, although it seems to take forever to flower. Worth waiting for. Grows well in my rain saturated soil in Hawaii.

What are the pros? Super easy to germinate

What are the cons? None

Review:

These were super easy to germinate, even washed some in my jeans and those all sprouted too. Beautiful plants, while the flowers are not too showy the red stems and calyxes are. I had no pests on these plants. They love heat but not drought and in our desert climate must be watered daily in summer. The calyxes make wonderful tea and preserves with amazing color. My only problem with these is I put them in too late in the season. They still flowered and produced nice plump calyxes. So far the plants are still alive here in December, up against a south-facing wall with a warm micro climate. I'm not sure what they will do come the rest of winter or spring, but so far they have surprised me.
