What are the pros? Great for salsas
What are the cons? none
FIRST OFF - I did not grow these from seed last year so this is not a review on starting from seeds.
I got this plant at a local nursery thinking they were the standard larger green tomatillos. So at first I thought they were not maturing at all and threw some out. But I took a few to a nearby Mexican food store and they owner told me these are highly prized, hard to find in stores, and expensive.
Unlike the green variety, they are no where near as astringent and sour and do not need to be simmered to use. Wonderful fresh in salsas and salads, or a quick stir-fry or tossed into fajitas.
The plant itself grows just like a tomato vine and produced 100's of tomatillos over several months. The good news is that they store in the refrigerator (keep in the husks) for a couple of months just fine.
I'm holding off buying the seeds only to see if I can find the plant again - I just don't seem to have much luck with tomato products starting from seed!
