Toothache Plant

(Spilanthes acmella) Pretty yellow and red cone-shaped flowers and leaves have properties similar to Echinacea; said to enhance the immune system, improve digestion and help nausea. The name toothache plant comes from the numbing properties it produces when the leaves and flowers are chewed, and it is used by many herbalists for this purpose. It is a tender perennial but can be grown as an annual in most areas.

Review:

I have dentures and my gums were giving me trouble. Thought I might as well try this plant and found it to worked great. Picked a few leaves, washed and applied to my gums. Numbed area and used several times for 2 days. It actually worked. I can't say enough about this plant. I tinctured it and froze several fresh leaves to use in winter. Would highly recommend

Review:

I have grown this for 3 years. First year: poor germination, none survived. Year two: Spectacular plants (8) bursting with flowers. Had no luck at the farmers market with them. No one was interested in its properties. Late in the season a mother said it helped her child who was teething -- she pulverized it with water and rubbed it on his gums. Also couldn't use them in bouquets -- the stems wilt quickly. This year I have given them less attention. This is the key: they need careful watching to get established, and I grow them under 50% shade cloth. Nice plants I like to have, but unfortunately now largely ignore. I would grow this every other year to keep fresh seed and for the medicinal value which I appreciate.

What are the pros? easing my toothache

What are the cons? none

Review:

This pretty plant is well behaved, easy to grow and even has nice leaves. Good as an ornamental. I happen to be getting a toothache, so this was my chance to try it out. It's actually taking the edge off the pain. May be placebo effect, but it is helping.

Review:

This was a neat plant to grow. It's not the prettiest but it's cool. Germinates easy, just toss on top of the soil, wet it, keep warm, and it does the rest.
