Toothache Plant

(Spilanthes acmella) Pretty yellow and red cone-shaped flowers and leaves have properties similar to Echinacea; said to enhance the immune system, improve digestion and help nausea. The name toothache plant comes from the numbing properties it produces when the leaves and flowers are chewed, and it is used by many herbalists for this purpose. It is a tender perennial but can be grown as an annual in most areas.

What are the pros? Pretty, interesting

What are the cons? Nothing

Review:

I grew this plant for the first time this year. The plants did well in pots but didn't do as well in my garden. The foliage is crinkly and dark green with a burgundy tinge to it. Very pretty. The flowers have a strong effect while you are chewing them. My son said that he felt like his mouth was sparkling. It was a fun joke to pull on visitors who think they are getting a delicious herbal treat. The effect lasts for several minutes and can be unpleasant the first few times. I grew to enjoy them and would chew several a day.

Review:

Chewing on the button flower is a unique sensation. It feels like pure energy coursing through your tongue and gums. It definitely numbs a pain. After the effect stopped most of the pain was gone. Maybe it increases circulation? Or deactivate pain receptors?

A fun plant with numerous uses! The seeds were simple to germinate in little pots sat on an oil heater in the house. Transplanted them outside in an a sunny area that was pretty neglected last summer and they grew like crazy! I tinctured the leaves and yellow flower buds in 100 proof vodka. It is antiviral, antibiotic, anti fungal, numbing and improves digestion. This has become our go-to tincture. We put it on insect bites & injuries full strength. Dilute the tincture with water and use as a mouth wash on sore gums, mouth sores, or gargle for sore throat. We take a teaspoon of tincture a few times per day if we feel like we are coming down with an illness. Sometimes I tincture it with some lemon balm and echinacea. The leaves can be put in salad. Take some of the buds to your next party or cookout. Lots of fun getting folks to pop a yellow bud in their mouth and chew! (They are also known as "Electric Buttons" and sold individually at Hipster Coffee Shops.)

What are the pros? Easy to grow and prolific

Review:

These grew like crazy and never stopped blooming. The flower is unusual looking worth it for the blooms. Beware the flower - chew on a small amount perhaps 1/8 tsp, you will get a sour, tingly, prickly sensation all over your tongue, then you'll produce copious amounts of saliva. Has a tingling slightly numbing effect- but does not last long 3-4 minutes. I made a tincture and when used on a sore gum or tooth it works great. Just dab a little tincture on a q-tip and dab the area.It is more numbing in this form. A little goes a long way.

Just threw the seeds in an empty planter around pool. Germinated quickly and flowered in about 60 days.
