The Cicerchia is not so well known in the USA , however in the mediterranean region it is a foodstuff for life.  In the rustic countryside of Umbria near the village of CAsteluccio several old fashioned crops are still cultivated as they were centuries ago. The Cicerchia is one of them.  these large meaty "giant lentils" are cooked in soups, porridges, stews and made into polentas. They are a mainstay of regional Italian cooking.  This particular variety from casteluccio is smaller in size but very flavorful and a favorite of top Italian chefs.  They grow well in poor soils and will take a good degree of cool weather and thrive. they are certainly worth trying out just to learn about a very long food tradition of old Europe!

Review:

The two other reviewers apparently did not grow this bean, and with apologies, neither have I. After reading their dire warnings about toxicity and animal fodder and so on, I looked up this species, because I find it difficult to believe that the Gettles would offer any irreponsibly toxic vegetables in their catalog. From Wikipedia: "The seeds contain a neurotoxin that causes a neurodegenerative disease when the seeds are consumed as a primary protein source for a prolonged period." Later in the article the point is driven home: "toxic if consumed in significantly large quantities for prolonged periods of time." Anyone who eats this bean to the point of becoming damaged by its (variable, by the way) neurotoxicity is actually in trouble, but for most of us, this is extremely unlikely to occur. We should all do our own research on this species before ordering. There is also a good article about this bean from The Atlantic (found via Google search). Bon appetit...

Review:

Known in Spain also as Almorta. A form of porridge called "gachas" is made from it's flour. It is toxic and listed as dangerous and forbiden cultivar in Spain

Review:

This lentil has a neurotoxin that can cause limb paralysis, a condition known as "latirism". It caused by the beta-N-oxalyl-L-alpha-beta-diaminopropionic aminoacid. In Spain it is called "Altramuz" .It is tipically made into flour and cooked into a type of porridge or as a supplement to animal feed. After the spanish Civil War and because of the famine that came the following years, intoxications were not rare. Use sparingly and do not very frequently or regularly.
