Violet De Galmi Onion

The Galmi onion comes from the village of Galmi, a small community in the Ader Valley of Southeast Niger. It is here where this flavorful onion was developed and is believed to have been grown for over 100 years, selected and passed down. It is now a popular onion in several other African countries, as well. Flat, thick bulbs are of good quality and are a beautiful pinkish-purple color; it also keeps well, making it a perfect choice as a short day onion.

Review:

These didn't grow well for me, not because they didn't sprout or anything, but because I didn't plant them in the best spot. A lack of sun and weeds had started to crowd them. I used what I could as green onion tops, as the bulbs were tiny and not useable. The tops were devoured though, and I will be planting them again but in a better spot. The biggest bulb I got was about the size of a pearl onion, great purple color and strong onion scent. I'm very confident that when I move my box, no doubt will they be the red onion I choose to grow.

Review:

Because I'm in Washington State the bulbs weren't very big, but I still liked this onion enough to grow it again. Cute little flat reddish bulbs- almost like shallots- good cooked or in salads/sandwiches.
