This French heirloom can grow 10 inches long and has deep violet-purple skin and pungent white flesh that is great for cooking, pickling or grated raw in salads. It is a fall/winter radish that is generally planted in summer or fall and harvested in early winter. Sometimes these can be spring sown in northern areas with great results. Introduced prior to 1885.

Review:

We planted only french heirloom varieties this year and I really wanted to like these radishes but they were very strong raw and extremely bitter when cooked. It is no shock that they are not very popular today. Also, the root was small compared to the massive growth of spiny foliage.

Review:

I live in SW Wisconsin and I planted these about mid-May. They were quick to bolt, were very leafy and about the end of June (with proper thinning) I had radishes that were 5-6" long and a pretty purple outside and creamy white on the inside. No problems with this one! These radishes are certainly not for the faint-hearted: they are very spicy! If you like really spicy radishes, these are the ones for you!
