Lovely, pointed, purple artichokes. Purple varieties have been popular in Italy for hundreds of years and are more tender than green types. Needs a mild climate. We are glad to introduce this heirloom to the USA.

What are the pros?
What are the cons?
After I started the seeds in the early spring I was flabbergasted that since I live in the Hudson Valley that these baby's came up. The spring here in the hudson valley was not nice to many of my plantings. The rains came in late May most of June and parts of July. I saw my choke's starting to fight their way to the Sun. But, not enough heat and sun was a detriment to my choke's. The greenery came up vividly but no fruit. I will try next year. Let there be HEAT.

These direct sow seeds were up in no time flat in my cold northern Ohio spring. They made it thru two or three frost even. They were distinct in appearance and I was sure these seedlings were the artichokes. I am going to overwinter these with mulch and a covering. I will keep you posted.
