What are the pros? Grows fast, plentiful

What are the cons? Tough when too large

Review:

I got a large package of this chard, wanting to try something other than the Fordhook Giant. I like the Vulcan a lot..but yes, it seems to be exactly like beet greens...minus the beets. In fact, I planted a row of Vulcan Chard next to a row of Detroit Dark Red Beets and cannot tell the difference between them. These greens are great to add in small quantities to salads, but once the leaves get too large, over 3 or 4 inches long, they become tougher to chew and not as enjoyable. Therefore it is wise to harvest them small and let them keep growing through April, May and June.

Review:

I don't know if it's my imagination or not, but these greens taste very faintly beet-top like (which I adore!) and lacks the typical bitterness the fordhook variety can take on. Odd thing however - it's only the first week of July and some of the plants have bolted. I don't know why. I just cut out the seedheads and cut more leaves for eating. The germination rate was incredible, where this year my rainbow chard hardly got off the ground. A sure favourite. In my garden they are more leaf than stem, they stay slim and tender. Thrilled with this selection.

A wonderful, prolific and hardy variety. Definitely my favorite swiss chard of the 2011 season.
