Waimanalo Low Bearing Solo Papaya

(Carica papaya) This is a really cool yellow-orange fleshed papaya that was developed in 1960 and was publicly introduced in 1968. It is a great medium sized papaya that has good flesh firmness and flavor. It stores well and because of this was shipped from Hawaii to the mainland before the advent of the GMO papayas. It has been produced commercially since the early 1970’s on the island of Maui especially in the drier areas. Nowadays quite a few home gardeners on the islands still prefer it for it’s unique qualities and color. In temperate zones it can be cultivated in large pots and taken indoors during the winter. As the name suggests it starts bearing when very short and continues for a good couple of years.

What are the pros? fast germination

What are the cons? none so far

I've often heard that papaya seeds don't store well and can be hard to germinate. I found they germinated well, at least 90% germination, in a few weeks when placed on wet paper towels in a closed container. Germinated seeds with roots showing were placed in pots of moist soil and seedlings appeared a week or so later. Will report on growth and fruit production on down the line.
